Abstract
Solid boronizing and laser surface treatment is applied to AISI 1045 steel to obtain the boron eutectic layer of proper microhardness and toughness. The wear behavior of the surface modified AISI 1045 steel specimen sliding against SAE 52100 steel in the presence of SiO 2 abrasives was examined with an MM 200 friction and wear tester. The morphologies of the worn surfaces were observed with a scanning electron microscope. The wear resistance of the boron permeated steel specimen is bettered after laser heat treatment. The surface modified layer is characterized by micro cracking and fracture in sliding against SAE 52100 steel in the presence of SiO 2 abrasives.
