Preparation and Friction and Wear Behavior of PMMA/OMMT Composites

Abstract
Composites of poly(methyl methacrylate)(PMMA) filled with organic montmorillonite(OMMT) were prepared by emulsion intercalation polymerization.The phase structures of the prepared composites were characterized by means of X-ray diffraction.The friction and wear behavior of the composites sliding against GCr15 steel at 150 N was examined on M-2000 text rig in a ring-on-block configuration.The worn surfaces of the composites were examined with a scanning electron microscopy.The composites containing 5% OMMT showed wear much better wear resistance than that of the PMMA matrix,while the friction coefficient increased slightly.The examination of the worn surfaces revealed that abrasive wear changed with the variation of OMMT content were the dominate wear mechanisms in PMMA.
