Effects of Al2O3 Short Fibers on the Dry Friction-Wear Properties of ZA22 Alloy

  • In view of the practical requirement in the field without lubricants,Al2O3 short fiberreinforced ZA22 alloy composites were prepared by means of squeeze casting method, and theirfriction-wear properties were investigated under the condition of dry friction. At the same time, themorphologies of wear surfaces were observed by means of scanning electron microscopy(SEM),andthen the wear mechanisms of those materials were analysed and discussed. The results show that thewear resistance of ZA22/Al2O3 composites is improved with the increase of Al2O3 fibers content, butthe friction property decreases. When fibers are vertical with the wear surface, the friction-wearproperties of the copmosites are better than that when fibers are parallel to the wear surface. Withthe increase of the load or wearing time, the friction coefficient of the composites decreases orincreases, and the weight loss of the composites increases obviously, but the increasing amplitude ofweight loss is smaller than that of ZA22 alloy matrix, and the increasing amplitude of the frictioncoefficient is greater than that of ZA22 alloy matrix. The wear mechanism of ZA22 alloy is mainlythe severe ploughing groove and adhesion, and that of ZA22/Al2O3 composites is mainly the slightploughing groove and oxidation.
