Dry Sliding Friction and Wear of High-speed Steel/45 Steel tribo-pair under Direct Current Steady Magnetic Field

  • The dry sliding friction and wear of high-speed steel/45# steel tribo-pairs were studied on a modified MPV-1500 tribo-tester at room temperature under direct current steady magnetic field. The results showed that reduced wear can be obtained at certain magnetic field intensities. The presence of magnetic field enhanced the oxidation of steels and increased the concentration of Fe2O3 on the worn surface, as the magnetic field intensity increased. The presence of Fe3O4 on the worn surface can be observed as the magnetic field strength was high enough. At a load of 250 N and a linear speed of 0.2 m/s, increasing the magnetic field intensity reduced wear of high-speed steel pin. The average friction coefficient and wear of 45# steel ring first decreased and then increased. The wear mechanisms involved were oxidation wear and adhesive wear.
