Abstract
Alumina and carbon short fibers reinforced Al-12Si aluminum alloy hybrid composites were fabricated by squeeze casting. The abrasive wear resistance of the resulting hybrid composites was investigated by sliding against SiC emery paper. It was found that there existed a critical diameter range of the emery paper in terms of the effect of the emery paper grit size on the abrasive wear resistance of the hybrid composites. The alumina fibre contributed to greatly increasing the abrasive wear resistance of the hybrid composites, but the carbon fiber was harmful to the abrasive wear resistance of the composites. The composite containing 12%Al_2O_3 fiber and 4%C fiber had the best wear resistance.
