Influence of PAN-fiber Flat Weaved form on the Sliding Tribological Behavior of C/C Composites

  • Four types of C/C composites were prepared using 2-dimension plain woven and piled fabric (2-D), 2-dimensional needled carbon fibric (2-DN) and 3-dimensional woven carbon fiberic (3-D) as performs, which were densified by a combination of chemical vapor infiltration with impregnation and carbonization of furan resin. The dry sliding friction and wear of the four composites against 40Cr steel coated by Cr were investigated on a M2000 wear tester at room temperature. The results showed that the composite reinforced by 2-D had the highest coefficient of friction (COF)., The fluctuation of COF and wear volume increased with increasing load and the maximum values were 0.17 and 1.22 mm3, respectively. The two composites with 2-DN had low COF which fluctuated between 0.13~0.17. The COFs of the composite with 2-DN decreased with sliding time while the composites with 2-D and 3-D increased. The COF of the four composites became steady with time. SEM observations showed that the worn surface of the composite with 2-D was very rough at low load but it had compacted film at high loads. On the worn surfaces of the composites with 2-DN and 3-D, the coexistence of compacted and integrated film, large worn fiber and peeled film were found.
