Three-Body Abrasive Wear Behavior of Iron Matrix Composites Reinforced with Tungsten Carbide Particles

  • WC reinforced high-Cr white cast iron matrix composites with honeycomb-shaped ceramic plates are prepared by the common infiltration casting technique. Structure and phases of the interface are investigated with optical microscope and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The dissolution and diffusion of the WC particles in the hot metal form an interlayer, which ensure metallurgical bonding of the interface between the high-Cr white cast iron and the particles. Wear performance of the composite with honeycomb hole are studied on three-body abrasive wear tester. The results show that the wear volume of the composite decreases gradually in the test. Comparing to heat-treated high-Cr cast iron, wear resistance of the composite increases obviously. As-cast composites has comparable wear resistance as the heat-treated composites.
