Experimental Study on the Relation Between the Contact Resonance Frequency and Friction-Induced Noise Frequency

  • A series of experimental tests on the correlation between the contact resonance and friction-induced noise were carried out using two ball-flat friction pairs on a reciprocating sliding tester. The test results indicate that the contact resonance frequency of the friction system was very close to the frequency of friction-induced noise, and their relative errors were almost less than 2%~5%. The scanning electron microscope was used for observing the topography of the worn surfaces. The results indicate that the mechanism for the contact resonance frequency being close to the frequency of friction-induced noise may be attributed to the interactive action between the contacting asperities. One can identify the frequency of friction-induced noise, which easily occurred in a practical friction sliding by the contact resonance test.
