Abstract
The wear behavior of B 2 ordered and DO 3 ordered Fe 3Al alloys containing Cr in water environment was studied. The morphology of the worn surface and the wear debris was investigated using SEM. SIMS analysis indicated that the concentration of hydrogen penetrating into the surface layer increased under abrasion. With increasing applied load, the surface layer of Fe 3Al alloy suffered severe hydrogen attack during abrasion. Both ordered Fe 3Al alloys revealed a synergism between hydrogen attack and wear. Wear of Fe 3Al alloys in water was characteristic of plastic deformation, pitting, cracking, and brittle fracture. The mechanical removal of Fe 3Al alloy was dominant at higher load in the wear process. The wear mass loss of B 2 ordered Fe 3Al was slightly lower than that of DO 3 ordered alloy at the same load.
