Study on the Friction and Wear Behaviors of the Al 2O 3 Based Ceramic Tool Material

  • TiB 2 has high melting point,high hardness,good heat conduction properties and high resistance to oxidation.It has broad prospects in the application of cutting tools,wear resisting parts and materials used in some special environments.The Al 2O 3 based ceramic tool material with the additions of TiB 2 has been developed and put into practical use today.But there is little published information on its friction and wear behaviors.Al 2O 3/TiB 2 ceramic tool materials was produced using hot pressing sintering technique.The friction and wear behavior of these materials with different TiB 2 content was investigated using MM 200 wear tester.It was found that with increasing TiB 2 content the wear resistance is obviously improved and the coefficient of friction is increased only a little.The wear resistance of Al 2O 3/TiB 2 is higher than that of Al 2O 3/TiC when machining hardened 45 # steel.The wear mechanisms are mainly adhesion,ploughing and microfracture.
