Effect of Groove on Interface Vibration and Friction and Wear Behaviors

  • In this work, the effect of groove on vibration and friction and wear properties was performed in ball-on-flat and flat-on-flat contact configurations. The results show that the groove had a capacity in trapping wear debris from the contact surface, which consequently alleviated the effect of wear debris on interfacial wear effectively. In addition, it is found the groove edge showed significant different vibration and tribological properties in the two contact configurations. In the ball-on-flat configuration, the groove interrupted the continue contact of the contact interfaces, which accordingly caused the abrupt change of the friction signals. Moreover, the collision behavior generated between the ball and groove edge further exacerbated the wear of the groove edge, and consequently affected the efficiency of groove in trapping wear debris. In the flat-on-flat configuration, the variation and redistribution of contact pressure was the major reason for the change of interfacial force signals, and no visible collision behavior was found between the pad and the edge of groove.
