Abstract:
The hydrophobic films on copper substrate were fabricated by a simple two-step process. Firstly, nano-structured film was created to roughen copper surface by chemical etching process in the presence of sodium hydroxide. Resultant roughened copper surface was then overcoated with stearic acid to achieve hydrophobicity. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, FT-IR Microscope and water contact angle measurement have been performed to characterize the morphological feature, chemical composition and hydrophobicity of the surface. The resulting surfaces had a water contact angle as high as ~146° and provide effective friction-reducing and wear protection for copper substrate, due to the combined beneficial effects of nanotexturing of sodium hydroxide treatment and nanolubrication of self-assembled stearic acid overcoat.
