Abstract: The state of the art and development in the tribology of surface engineering are reviewed with emphasis on introducing the current state and developing trends of the second generation surface engineering techniques. The future directions in the research and development of surface engineering tribology and tribological surface modification techniques are briefed as well. It is anticipated that duplex surface engineering techniques will find wider applications in the 21st century.
