Abstract:
A kind of micro-dimple surface texture was designed and produced using the Computer Numerical Control precision machining on the surface of cylinder sections. Reciprocating friction and wear tester was used to study the effect of micro-dimple texture on friction performance of cylinder-piston ring friction pair of the internal combustion engine under different working conditions. The experimental data indicate that the average friction coefficient of micro-dimple texture can be higher (up to 33.68%) or lower (up to 41.83%) than that of untextured surface. Micro-dimple texture provided lower friction coefficient than untextured surface under the appropriate working conditions, which could be the basis for practical application. The rotational speed was the main factor affecting the lubricating properties of the textured surfaces. Variations of contact resistance and friction coefficient were dependent on rotational speed. Load was another factor affecting the lubricating properties of the textured surfaces.
